How big will the square be?
The frame opens as the largest square the photo holds, centred. Its side is the photo's shorter side, and whatever lies beyond it on the longer side is what the crop removes.

A phone photo loses a quarter either way round. A wider photo loses more, which is why a group shot or a landscape is harder to square than a portrait.

Crop here or resize to 1080 x 1080?
Both give a square. The 1080 x 1080 page always keeps the middle of the photo and scales it to exactly 1080 pixels, which suits a photo whose subject is already centred.
This page lets you choose which square survives and keeps it at the photo's own resolution. Use it when the subject sits off to one side, or when you want every pixel of the original.

Can I make it square without cutting anything off?
Not with this tool. Turning a rectangle into a square means removing part of it or adding to it, and this page only removes.
Adding means padding the short sides with a border or a blurred copy of the photo, so the whole picture fits. A 4000 x 3000 photo then becomes a 4000 x 4000 square with a 500 pixel band above and below.

Common questions
How do I get an exact 1080 x 1080 square?
Place the square here, then switch to Pixels and type 1080 as the width. The crop stays applied, so the height follows at 1080 and the file is the square you chose.
Can I crop a portrait photo to a square?
Yes. On a portrait photo the square spans the full width, and you drag it up or down to choose the band. A 3000 x 4000 phone photo gives a 3000 x 3000 square.
Does cropping to a square lower the quality?
The crop copies the pixels it keeps unchanged. Saving as JPEG encodes the file again, which is where any loss comes from, so keep the quality high if you will edit the square later.
