What happens to the file size?
It depends on what you start with. We saved one 3072 x 2048 photo in all seven formats, then converted each copy to JPG here at the default quality of 82.

A PNG or BMP photo shrinks a lot, because those formats keep every pixel exactly. The PNG, BMP and JPEG copies held the same pixels and gave the same JPG, to the byte.
A WebP or AVIF photo gets bigger. Both compress better than JPG, so switching costs size. Convert one only when the place you are sending it will not take the original.
Why does a transparent background turn white?
Because JPG has no transparency at all. Every clear pixel needs a colour, so this tool paints white behind the image before it saves.
Some converters fill it with black instead, which is why a logo can come back as a dark rectangle. White is what most pages and documents sit on.
A logo or graphic also gets bigger as a JPG. Our 800 x 400 transparent logo was a 3.6 KB PNG and became a 14.9 KB JPG, about four times the size.
Keep a graphic as PNG unless something demands JPG. If you need the clear background later, keep the original too, since white cannot be turned back into transparent.
Is JPEG the same as JPG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are two spellings of one format. The three-letter version dates from older Windows systems, which allowed only three letters after the dot.
Renaming a .jpeg file to .jpg changes nothing inside it, so there is no need to convert one into the other. This tool names its downloads .jpg.
Which formats can it open?
Seven: JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, GIF and BMP. The tool says which one it recognised once your file opens, next to the format buttons.
An animated GIF becomes one still JPG of its first frame, since JPG cannot hold animation. Our three-frame test GIF came out exactly matching frame one.
It cannot open TIFF, PSD, camera RAW, SVG or PDF files. Export one of those to PNG from the program that made it, then convert that here.

Common questions
Does converting to JPG lose quality?
Yes, a little, because JPG discards fine detail to make the file small. At the default quality of 82 the change is very hard to see on a photograph.
Converting a JPEG to JPG again adds a second round of loss, so keep the original if you have it.
Can I choose the JPG quality?
Yes. After your image opens, move the Quality slider in the settings panel. A higher number keeps more detail and makes a bigger file.
To stay under a limit, such as 200 KB for a form, choose File size at the top of the panel and pick or type the limit instead.
Why is my JPG bigger than the original?
Because the original compressed better than JPG does. In our tests a WebP photo grew from 836.2 KB to 1.08 MB, and a small transparent logo grew four times.
Lower the quality slider if the size matters more than the detail.
Does the JPG keep my photo's location and camera details?
No. The JPG is drawn fresh from the pixels, so the EXIF data from the original, including any GPS position, is not copied across.
The width and height stay exactly as they were.
