How does the platform state its sizes?
Etsy lists its image sizes on one help page and mixes three kinds of figure there: recommended sizes, minimum required sizes and a plain floor for listing photos.
Each row below says which kind it is, names its source and gives the date it was read. Where Etsy states only a minimum, the row says the size is this tool's choice.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

Common questions
What size is an Etsy shop logo?
Etsy recommends 500 by 500 pixels for a shop logo, which some sellers call the shop icon. Its help also says a shop without a logo may be less visible in Etsy search.
Etsy shows the clear parts of a transparent PNG as black. Shop logo here saves a JPEG, with anything transparent turned white.
What size is an Etsy profile photo?
Etsy recommends 400 by 400 pixels for a profile photo. That is a smaller square than the 500 by 500 it recommends for the shop logo, so the two are separate uploads.
Profile photo here crops your picture to a square from the centre. Use the crop tool first if the face is off to one side.
What size is an Etsy team logo?
Etsy recommends 170 by 100 pixels for a team logo. It is a wide rectangle, not a square.
A square logo cropped to that shape keeps only 59% of its height. To keep the whole logo, choose Fill the box and it gets a border at the sides instead.
What size are the pictures in an Etsy collage banner?
It depends on how many there are. Etsy's minimum is 600 by 300 pixels each for two images, 400 by 300 for three and 300 by 300 for four.

Is there a file size limit for Etsy images?
Etsy states one figure, and as a warning, not a rule: listing images larger than 1MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slow connection.
It accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg and .heic files, but not an animated GIF or a transparent PNG.
