Why this size?

Shopify lays product images side by side on collection pages, and its help says they only line up when every main image shares one aspect ratio. Pick Square or Portrait once, then use it for every product.

The file you upload is the master copy, not what shoppers download. Shopify makes smaller copies for each spot in your theme and sends each browser the best format it supports.

Preset: 2048 × 2048 px. Check the dated platform guidance on this page.

These numbers move, so check the date

A passport size has been the same for decades.

A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.

That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.

Why your photo gets cropped

Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.

The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.

If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

Crop fills the box. Fit preserves the entire image and leaves unused space.

What happens to your photo?

Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.

Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.

Common questions

What size should Shopify product images be?

Shopify's help says a square product image of 2048 by 2048 pixels usually displays best. It accepts any size up to 5000 by 5000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, as long as the file is under 20 MB.

This page makes 2048 by 2048 by default, and Portrait gives 2048 by 2560.

Should Shopify product images be square or portrait?

Either works, as long as every product uses the same one. Shopify's help warns that main images of different shapes show at different sizes side by side on a collection page.

Shopify's Dawn theme draws a portrait product card at exactly 4:5, so Portrait here makes 2048 by 2560 to fill it. That box is our choice: Shopify names no portrait size.

Should I use PNG or JPEG for Shopify product images?

Shopify's help says the best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG, so this page writes a PNG. PNG also keeps a transparent background, which suits a cut-out product.

A PNG is bigger: three photos we tried came out at 4.7 to 9.9 MB, still under the 20 MB limit. Most guides say JPEG to keep files small, but shoppers never download your file.

Should I compress product photos before uploading to Shopify?

No need. Shopify makes its own copies of every image and sends each browser the format it handles best. We asked for one store's PNG product image as a browser does and got a WebP of 139,590 bytes, where the PNG was 302,614.

So keep the upload under 20 MB and let Shopify shrink it.

What size should a Shopify collection image be?

Shopify's help gives no collection image size. The 1024 by 1024 many guides quote is on no Shopify page we read. Your theme decides the shape, and Dawn draws collection cards square or 4:5 portrait, like its product cards.

A 2048 by 2048 image fills a square collection card with room to spare.

Which image file names does Shopify change?

Shopify's file rules say an image name cannot end in pico, icon, thumb, testing, small, compact, medium, large or grande, because its CDN reads those words as resize requests. A file named that way gets a suffix added on upload.

This page names the download after your photo plus its size, such as shoe-2048x2048.png, so it never ends in one of those words.

Does Shopify zoom need images over 800 pixels?

Shopify's blog says zoom needs images larger than 800 by 800 pixels. We found that in no Help Center article, and zoom is a theme feature, so your theme's documentation has the final word.

A 2048 by 2048 image clears that figure either way.
