Facebook says a profile picture should be 320 by 320 pixels for best quality, and shows it cropped to a circle at 176 by 176 on a computer and 196 by 196 on a phone. Drop a photo here and it comes out as that 320 square, cropped from the centre, with nothing uploaded.

Why this size?
Your profile picture sits beside every post, comment and message you send, far smaller than you uploaded it.
Facebook cuts the square to a circle, so the corners, about a fifth of the image, never show. Centre a face or a logo and leave a margin around it.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
What size is a Facebook profile picture?
Facebook's dimensions page says a Page's profile picture should be 320 pixels wide and 320 tall for best quality. It displays at 176 by 176 on a computer, 196 by 196 on a smartphone and 36 by 36 on most feature phones.
The help for a personal profile names no size, so 320 by 320 is the one figure Facebook publishes.
Is the minimum 180 by 180?
Not as Facebook writes it. Its article on editing the thumbnail says the minimum photo size for a profile picture is 180 px by 60 px, which is not a square.
Many guides quote it as 180 by 180. A 320 square clears either reading.
Should I upload something bigger than 320 by 320?
Facebook's page states no maximum and no file size limit for a profile picture, and calls 320 by 320 the size for best quality.
The 360, 720 and 2048 squares in many guides are the guides' own advice. None of them appears on the Facebook help pages read for this page.
Why is my profile picture cropped to a circle?
Because Facebook shows it round everywhere. In 2018 the same help page said the picture stayed square on the Page itself and was cut round only in ads and posts.
A circle inside a square hides about 21% of it, all in the corners. A phone portrait also loses 53 pixels from the top and bottom to become the 320 square.
