Why this size?
eBay puts your main photo beside the title in search results, and buyers enlarge the rest to judge condition. eBay's own tip is that small photos get blurry when enlarged.
Going bigger than 1600 does not help either. eBay's developer guide says its picture service keeps at most 1600 by 1600 and scales anything larger down.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
What size should eBay listing photos be?
eBay recommends photos about 1600 by 1600 pixels, and says photos in a 1:1 or 16:9 aspect ratio look best in listings and search results.
This page makes 1600 by 1600 by default. Wide gives 1600 by 900, eBay's 16:9 at the same 1600 pixel long side. That box is our choice: eBay names the ratio, not the size.
What is the minimum photo size on eBay?
eBay's picture policy requires at least one photo that is 500 pixels on its longest side, so a 500 by 300 photo meets it. The help page's 500 by 500 is the square case of the same rule.
Enlarging a smaller photo here clears the minimum, but it adds no detail the camera did not capture.
Should I upload photos larger than 1600 pixels?
It does no harm, and it gains nothing. eBay's developer guide says the largest copy its picture service stores is 1600 by 1600, and bigger images are scaled down to fit.
Many guides say 1600 pixels switches on zoom. We found that on no eBay page, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not eBay's word.
Can I add a border or watermark to eBay photos?
No. eBay's picture policy bans added borders, added text or artwork, and watermarks of any kind. Its photo tips add that graphics like these can hurt your placement in search.
This tool crops a photo from the centre to fill the size. It never pads it onto a white square, which can read as a border.
What size is an eBay Gallery Plus picture?
Gallery Plus shows your main photo up to 400 by 400 pixels when a buyer hovers over it in search results, instead of the standard 96 pixels. It uses the main photo, so there is nothing separate to upload.
A 1600 by 1600 main photo covers it with room to spare.
What file types does eBay accept, and how large?
JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, HEIC and AVIF, up to 12MB each, and up to 24 photos per listing. eBay's developer guide says any file that is not a JPG is converted to one on upload.
This page writes a JPEG to begin with, and fills any transparent area with white first.
