Why this size?
Telegram fixes only one side, so a wide sticker can be 512 by 300 and a tall one 300 by 512.
This page makes a 512 square instead and fits the whole picture inside it, with transparent sides. That meets the same rule, the clear sides do not show in a chat, and nothing is cropped off a tall photo.

A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.
What happens to your photo?

Common questions
Does a Telegram sticker have to be 512 by 512?
No. Telegram's sticker page says one side must be exactly 512 pixels and the other 512 or less. So 512 by 384 and 300 by 512 are both fine, but 500 by 512 is not.
A square with transparent sides meets the rule as well, and that is what this tool makes.
Should a Telegram sticker be a PNG or a WebP, and how big can it be?
Telegram takes either. Its guide to importing stickers caps a still sticker at 512 KB, a figure its main sticker page leaves out.
A detailed photo saved as a 512 PNG can pass that: 6 of our 66 sample images did, the largest at 713,595 bytes. As WebP the same images came to 83,404 bytes at most. This page keeps either format under the cap.
What size is a Telegram sticker pack icon?
100 by 100 pixels. Telegram's Bot API allows a PNG or WebP icon of up to 128 KB, and an animated or video icon of up to 32 KB. Guides giving 32 KB for every icon are quoting the animated figure.
Skip the icon and Telegram uses the pack's first sticker. Switch to Emoji and pack icon above for a 100 by 100 PNG, which cannot reach 128 KB.
What size is a Telegram custom emoji?
Exactly 100 by 100 pixels, as a PNG or WebP, the same box as a pack icon.
Anyone can create a custom emoji set, but Telegram's sticker page says adding and using custom sets is for Telegram Premium users only.
Can I make an animated or video sticker here?
No. This tool saves one still image, and an animated GIF dropped here keeps only one frame.
An animated sticker is a TGS file made in After Effects with Telegram's Bodymovin-TG plugin, at most 64 KB. A video sticker is a WEBM using the VP9 codec, with no sound, up to 3 seconds and 256 KB.
Does a Telegram sticker need an outline?
It is not required. Telegram's tip is a transparent background, a white stroke and a black shadow, which it says will make your sticker stand out.
This tool draws neither the stroke nor the shadow. Remove background in the editor gives you the transparent part.
