Why this size?
The profile banner runs across the top of your channel page and is stretched to the width of the viewer's window. Twitch's own advice is to make it as wide as you can and keep the important part on the left.
The video player banner fills the player while you are not live.

A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

What size is a Twitch profile banner?
Twitch recommends 1200 by 480 pixels. Any banner is scaled to 480 pixels high, and Twitch keeps its own width: banners on eight channels read for this page ran from 853 to 1440 pixels wide.
Why does my Twitch banner look stretched?
Because a browser window wider than the banner stretches it, Twitch's help says. Make it wider than 1200 by changing the width above while keeping 480 high, and put your name and art on the left.
What size is a Twitch video player banner?
Twitch's help does not give one. Every offline banner served on the channels read for this page was stored at 1920 by 1080, and the files are named that way, so this tool makes 1920 by 1080.
It cannot be animated.
Is there a file size limit for Twitch banners?
Twitch's help gives 10MB for a profile picture and states no limit for either banner, so this page claims none. A JPG at these sizes is well under a megabyte.
