Why this size?
The picture ringed on your stories, beside your comments and at the top of your profile is always a small circle.
A square cropped close around one face still reads at that size. A group shot or a landscape does not, and whatever sits in the corners is never seen.
Posting a photo to the feed as well? Instagram post size.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
What size should an Instagram profile picture be?
Instagram does not say. Its help article on adding or changing a profile picture gives the steps and no size, shape or file limit.
This tool makes a 1080 by 1080 square, the widest profile picture Instagram was found to keep on the date above.
Where does 320 by 320 come from?
From Instagram itself, in 2020. Its public profile data then linked the picture at 150 by 150 and a high resolution copy at 320 by 320, and guides have repeated that figure since.
Instagram now keeps more. Of 97 profile pictures read for this page, 42 were stored exactly 1080 wide and none wider.
What size is an Instagram profile picture shown at?
On instagram.com, the picture at the top of a profile is 150 by 150 on a computer and 96 by 96 at phone width, measured on ten public profiles.
The 110 by 110 many guides give for the app was not measured for this page.
Why is my Instagram profile picture round?
Instagram shows it as a circle, and a circle inside a square hides about 21% of it, all in the corners.
A phone portrait also loses 180 pixels from the top and from the bottom to become the 1080 square, so keep the face in the middle.
