Why this size?
Etsy crops your first photo into square, portrait and landscape thumbnails across the site. Its help page says to avoid square crops and upload landscape, because a wide photo leaves room around the product for every one of those crops.
The 2000 pixels is a recommendation, not a rule. The line that costs you is lower: a first photo under 635 pixels on either side can show up lower in search.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

What happens to your photo?

Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels wide and 2000 tall, and names no exact box. Any photo at or above that on both sides meets it.
This tool makes 2667 by 2000, a 4:3 landscape. That is the shape most phone cameras shoot, at the smallest size where both sides reach 2000. Square gives 2000 by 2000.
What is the Etsy thumbnail size?
Etsy states no thumbnail size. Your first photo becomes the thumbnail, and Etsy crops it to square, portrait and landscape views in different places. The pixel sizes resizer sites give, such as 570 by 456, are on no Etsy help page we found.
After uploading, use Adjust Thumbnail on the listing to place the product so it reads in all three views.
Should Etsy photos be square or landscape?
Etsy allows either for the first photo, then advises you to avoid square crops and upload horizontal or landscape images. A square has nothing spare when the thumbnail is cropped wide, so the top and bottom of the product can be cut.
That is why Landscape is the default here. The first photo also sets the shape of the ones after it, so keep them all the same.
Is there a file size limit for Etsy photos?
Not a hard one. Etsy's image page says files over 1 MB may not finish uploading on a slow connection, and its listing page says files over 300 KB may time out. Both are advice about upload speed.
Five sample photos made here at 2667 by 2000 came out between 534 and 924 KB: under the 1 MB, over the 300 KB. Upload first, and make the file smaller only if it stalls.
Why does my PNG have a black background on Etsy?
Etsy does not support transparent PNG files, and its help page says the transparent parts will appear black. A product cut out onto a see-through background is the usual way this happens.
This page writes a JPEG, which has no transparency, and fills any see-through area with white first. Drop the PNG here and download the JPEG.
What if my photo is smaller than 2000 pixels?
Etsy still publishes it. Its notice that listings look best at 2000 pixels wide is, in Etsy's words, only a suggestion.
The stricter line is 635 pixels: a first photo narrower or shorter than that can appear lower in search. Enlarging a small original to 2000 here clears both, but adds no detail the camera did not capture.
