Why this size?
SoundCloud's help states one figure for track, playlist and profile images: at least 800 by 800 pixels, as a JPG or PNG of 2 MB or less. That is a floor, not a target.
On 6 October 2026 a SoundCloud track page loaded its artwork as a 1080 by 1080 copy, and an original stored at 600 by 600 came back enlarged to fill it. Uploading 1080 leaves nothing to enlarge.
A release sent to Spotify or Apple Music through SoundCloud is a separate upload with its own rule: a perfect square of at least 3000 by 3000.
Distribution artwork is asked for at 300 DPI. To write that into the file: Change image DPI.
These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

What size is SoundCloud track artwork?
SoundCloud's help says to upload a .jpg or .png of at least 800 by 800 pixels, under 2 MB. It gives the same figure for playlist artwork and says square images look best.

What size is SoundCloud artwork for distribution?
At least 3000 by 3000 pixels at 300 dpi, a perfect 1:1 square, as a PNG or JPEG. That is SoundCloud's rule for a release it sends to other streaming services.
Distribution artwork here makes 3000 by 3000. A smaller photo is enlarged to fill it, and SoundCloud rejects blurry or pixelated artwork, so start from the largest original you have.
What size is a SoundCloud banner?
SoundCloud calls it the profile header and asks for a JPG or PNG of at least 2480 by 520 pixels, with a 2 MB limit. Below 1240 by 260 you cannot zoom the picture when placing it.
It is a very wide strip. A 4032 by 3024 landscape photo keeps 28% of its height. SoundCloud also says to avoid text, because the header is cropped on smaller screens.
What size is a SoundCloud profile picture?
Square and at least 800 by 800 pixels, 2 MB or less, with .jpg or .png recommended. SoundCloud shows the avatar as a circle, so keep the face or logo away from the corners.

Is there a file size limit for SoundCloud images?
Yes, 2 MB, for track artwork, playlist artwork, the profile picture and the header. SoundCloud's distribution guidelines state no file size.
The sizes under that limit stay far below it here. Pure noise, the hardest picture to compress, saved at 429 KB as Track artwork and 733 KB as a Header.
Distribution artwork is bigger: a real photo saved at 1.1 MB and the noise at 5.1 MB.
What size is podcast artwork on SoundCloud?
A SoundCloud podcast feed uses your profile image as its artwork. To submit the feed to Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud says that image must be at least 1400 by 1400 pixels and no larger than 3000 by 3000.
The usual 1080 profile picture is too small for that. Podcast artwork here makes 1400 by 1400.
Does editing my track artwork change it on Spotify?
No. SoundCloud's help says edits made with the pencil icon update only your SoundCloud profile. A release that is already live in other stores keeps the artwork it was distributed with.
To change that artwork you edit the release itself, and the new file has to meet the 3000 by 3000 distribution rule.
