Why this size?
A banner is a thin strip, 4 to 1 on a profile and almost 6 to 1 on a company Page, so most of an ordinary photo has to go. Cropping it yourself decides which strip stays.
The two strips are different shapes, so one export cannot serve both. Make each one from the switcher rather than trimming the profile banner down.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

What size is a LinkedIn company Page cover?
LinkedIn's Page image specifications give 1512 by 256 pixels as both the minimum and the recommended size, in a PNG or JPEG up to 3 MB.
The same page said 1128 by 191 until at least August 2025, then 4200 by 700 by February 2026. Guides quoting either are repeating an older version.
Does a cover made at 1128 by 191 still fit?
Its shape does. 1512 by 256 and 1128 by 191 are both about 5.9 to 1, so the new size is the old one made larger.
The 4200 by 700 figure was a slightly wider 6 to 1. Remake an old cover at 1512 by 256 so it meets the new minimum.
Why is my LinkedIn banner cropped?
On a profile, your photo sits over part of the banner, and LinkedIn says how it appears changes with the browser window and screen resolution.
For a Page, LinkedIn says the cover may be trimmed horizontally or vertically. It advises keeping key details away from the edges, especially the lower right corner.
What file types does LinkedIn accept for a banner?
JPG or PNG. A profile banner must be under 8 MB and a Page cover at most 3 MB. LinkedIn's upload help says GIFs are not supported.
This tool saves a JPG. A 3904 by 2602 street photo came out at 135 KB as a profile banner and 85 KB as a Page cover.
How much of my photo is cropped to make a banner?
A 4032 by 3024 landscape keeps its middle 396 of 1188 rows as a profile banner, and 256 of 1134 as a Page cover.
A 1920 by 1080 frame loses 247 rows from the top and from the bottom at 1584 by 396, so put the subject in the middle of a wide shot.
