A server icon must be at least 128 by 128, and Discord's developer docs describe it as 1024 by 1024. Drop an image here and it comes out as a 1024 by 1024 PNG, cropped from the centre, for either.

Why this size?

Discord stores these pictures large and serves them at whatever size the screen needs, from 16 to 4096 pixels, always a power of two.

Starting from 1024 means every one of those copies is made by shrinking, which keeps them sharp.

These numbers move, so check the date

A passport size has been the same for decades.

A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.

That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.

Why your photo gets cropped

Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.

The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.

If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

Common questions

What size should a Discord profile picture be?

Discord's help does not say. It lists the file types, PNG and GIF, the GIF for Nitro members, and lets you crop after uploading.

This tool makes a 1024 by 1024 PNG, which Discord can shrink to any size it shows.

What size is a Discord server icon?

At least 128 by 128, says Discord's help on creating a server. Its developer docs describe the icon as a 1024 by 1024 PNG, JPEG or GIF image.

1024 by 1024 meets both, so that is what this tool makes.

Can a server avatar be a JPG?

Yes. Discord's Per-Server Profiles article accepts PNG and JPG, and GIF for Nitro, up to 8 MB. Its Custom Profiles article lists only PNG and GIF for your main profile picture, so PNG works for both.

Can a server icon be animated?

Yes, from Boost Level 1, which takes 2 Boosts. Discord lists an animated server icon among the Level 1 perks.
