Why this size?

On a phone, a 4:5 portrait fills more of the feed than a square or a landscape, which is why Meta recommends it for Facebook Feed.

A phone photo is 3:4, a little taller than 4:5, so it loses only a thin strip. Choosing that strip yourself keeps a head from being trimmed.

Preset: 1440 × 1800 px. Check the dated platform guidance on this page.

These numbers move, so check the date

A passport size has been the same for decades.

A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.

That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.

Why your photo gets cropped

Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.

The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.

If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

The same landscape fills a square by cropping, or fits inside it with space above and below. The same landscape fills a square by cropping, or fits inside it with space above and below.
Crop fills the box. Fit preserves the entire image and leaves unused space.

Common questions

What size is a Facebook post?

Facebook's help centre no longer says. The sizes Meta does publish for the feed are in its ads help: 1440 by 1800 pixels for a 4:5 portrait and 1080 by 1080 for a square.

Meta's ads guide adds JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB, and at least 600 pixels wide.

Is it 1080 by 1350 or 1440 by 1800?

Both are 4:5, so either fills the same space in the feed. 1440 by 1800 is the figure Meta publishes for Facebook Feed, and it calls that a minimum rather than a target.

1080 by 1350 is the size most guides give. No Meta page read for this one gives it for Facebook.

Does Facebook shrink photos wider than 2048 pixels?

It used to say so. Its help article on photo quality asked for 720, 960 or 2048 pixels wide in 2019, and 2048 pixels wide or smaller in 2021.

That article is no longer available, and Facebook now publishes no upload limit for a post. Both sizes here are under 2048 on each side.

Can I post a landscape or a tall photo?

Yes, but Meta's placement table lists only 1.91:1, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:5 for Facebook Feed, and recommends 4:5. Taller shapes such as 2:3 and 9:16 are not on that list.

Meta gives no pixel size for a landscape feed photo, so this page makes only the two sizes it does.

How much of my photo is cropped?

Very little from a phone portrait. A 3024 by 4032 photo is scaled to 1440 by 1920 and loses 60 rows from the top and from the bottom.

A 4032 by 3024 landscape keeps only its middle 1440 of 2400 columns as a portrait. As a square it keeps 1080 of 1440, so Square suits a landscape better.
