TikTok's help gives only a minimum for a profile photo, 20 by 20 pixels, and the largest copy it served of any profile photo we measured was 1080 by 1080. Drop a photo here and it comes out as a 1080 by 1080 square JPG, cropped from the centre or fitted inside a border.

Why this size?

TikTok shows a profile photo as a small circle beside every video and comment, and larger at the top of a profile.

Its own profile pages link the photo at 100, 720 and 1080 pixels square. A 1080 square covers the largest of the three.

These numbers move, so check the date

A passport size has been the same for decades.

A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.

That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.

Why your photo gets cropped

Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.

The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.

If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.

Common questions

What size should a TikTok profile picture be?

TikTok does not say. Its help page on adding a profile photo gives the steps and one figure: photos must be at least 20 by 20 pixels to upload.

This tool makes 1080 by 1080, the largest copy TikTok served of the 12 profile photos we measured.

Is 200 by 200 the TikTok profile picture size?

Not according to TikTok. Its help page states no display size, and 200 by 200 does not appear on it.

Three of the 12 accounts we measured had a 400 by 400 photo, and TikTok served it at 400, not enlarged. A 200 pixel upload has even less to show.

Does a bigger upload look sharper on TikTok?

Up to 1080 pixels, yes. Nine of the 12 photos were smaller than 1080 by 1080, from 400 to 923 pixels wide, and TikTok served each at its own size.

Past 1080 nothing is gained. No copy larger than that was served for any account.

Why is my TikTok profile picture cut off?

TikTok shows the photo as a circle, so the corners of the square are never seen. Keep the face in the middle.

To keep the whole of a tall or wide photo, pick White border, Black border or Blurred border under Fill the box.

Is there a file size limit or a required format?

TikTok's profile photo help page states neither. The 5MB and 20MB limits some guides give are not on it.

TikTok serves its own JPEG whatever you upload. The 12 we measured were 7 to 166 KB each.

What size is a TikTok photo post?

We found no photo post size in TikTok's help pages. The image sizes TikTok does publish are for adverts, a different placement, so this page gives none.
