Why this size?
Etsy's help says your shop banner shows on phones as well as computers. Its Seller Handbook adds that the mini banner does not, so on a phone a mini banner shop has no banner at all.
The big banner has two Etsy sizes, both 4:1. One crop fits both, so pick the larger only if your image is at least 3360 pixels wide.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.
What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.

Common questions
Is the Etsy big banner 1600 x 400 or 3360 x 840?
Both are Etsy's. Its help centre has recommended 1600 by 400 since at least 2020, with a minimum of 1200 by 300. Its Seller Handbook says 3360 by 840 for optimal performance.
The two are the same 4:1 shape. Big banner makes 1600 by 400; Big 3360 makes 3360 by 840 from the same crop.
What size is the Etsy mini banner?
At least 1200 by 160, and Etsy recommends 1600 by 213. It is a thin strip that moves your listings higher up the page.
Etsy's Seller Handbook says mini banners do not appear on mobile devices. If most of your buyers shop on a phone, a big banner is the one they will see.
What size is the Etsy order receipt banner?
Etsy's minimum is 760 by 100. It goes on the receipt buyers get when they order. Upload it in Shop Manager, under Settings, then Info and Appearance.
Etsy names no larger size, so Order receipt makes exactly 760 by 100. Keep any shop name large: it has 100 pixels of height to work with.
What sizes are the Etsy carousel and collage banners?
Both need an Etsy Plus subscription. A carousel shows up to four images, each recommended at 1200 by 300, which is what Carousel makes.
A collage uses two, three or four images at a minimum of 600 by 300, 400 by 300 or 300 by 300 each.
What file type should an Etsy banner be?
Etsy takes JPG, GIF and PNG, but no animated GIF and no transparent PNG: the clear parts show as black.
Every size on this page downloads as a JPEG, so a logo on a see-through background is filled with white before it reaches Etsy.
What size is the Etsy shop icon?
Etsy recommends 500 by 500 for the shop logo, and the Seller Handbook says it shows at that full size on your shop home. A shop owner photo should be at least 400 by 400.
Neither is a banner, so this page does not make them; any square crop at those sizes works.
