Why this size?
Snapchat's help says its content has a 9:16 aspect ratio and that a video in another shape is cropped automatically. It names no pixel size for a photo.
The 1080 by 1920 in every chart is the canvas Snapchat gives advertisers. It is the same shape, so this page uses it too.
The profile figures come from Snapchat's guide to Public Profiles for businesses, the one place it states them. There, 320 by 320 is a minimum, not a target.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.
What happens to your photo?

What size is a Snapchat Snap or Story?
Snapchat's help states a shape, not a size: its content has a 9:16 aspect ratio. For a video posted from the web it asks for at least 540 by 960.
Advertisers are given a 1080 by 1920 canvas with a 720 by 1280 minimum. Snap and Story here makes 1080 by 1920, which matches all three.
What size is a Snapchat profile picture?
At least 320 by 320 pixels, as a PNG or JPG of up to 2 MB. That is from Snapchat's guide to setting up a Public Profile, and it is a minimum.

What size is the Snapchat header image?
Snapchat gives upload dimensions of 375 by 569 and says 375 by 258 of that is visible on the profile. On the web the photo must be under 2 MB.
Those are small figures. The two profiles we read stored headers of 712 by 1080 and 506 by 767, both in that shape. Header here makes 1125 by 1707, three times Snapchat's figure.
Is there a file size limit for Snapchat images?
For a Public Profile, yes: 2 MB for the profile photo and under 2 MB for the header. Snapchat's help states no limit for a photo sent as a Snap.
The 5 MB in most charts is the limit for an image ad.
Both profile files this page makes stay under 2 MB: pure noise, the hardest picture to compress, saved at 1.1 MB as a Header and 542 KB as a Profile picture.
What size is a Snapchat filter or geofilter?
Snapchat has published two. Its Custom Creative Tools guidelines say 1080 by 2340, and its AR Filter specification for advertisers says 945 by 2048. Both want a transparent PNG under 300 KB.
Snapchat stopped supporting On-Demand Geofilters on 10 February 2023. A filter is a designed overlay, not a resized photo, so this page has no filter size.
What size is a Spotlight image?
There is none to give. Snapchat's steps for posting to Spotlight all start with a video Snap of 5 seconds or longer, and its page on posting from the web asks for a video too.
Spotlight video is the same 9:16 shape as a Snap, at 540 by 960 or more.
How much of my photo is cropped for a Snap?
A photo already in 9:16, such as a phone screenshot or a tall camera shot, loses nothing.
A standard 3 by 4 phone photo loses a quarter of its width: 3024 by 4032 scales to 1440 by 1920, and 180 pixels come off each side. To keep the whole photo, use Fill the box and it gets a border instead.
