Why this size?
WhatsApp keeps a profile photo as a square and shows it in a circle. Of the 13 channel and group photos we measured, none was larger than 640 by 640, and each was a JPEG of 5 to 62 KB.
So a bigger upload gains nothing, and a smaller one stays small: WhatsApp does not enlarge it.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.

That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.
What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
What size should a WhatsApp DP be?
WhatsApp's help does not say. Meta's guide to its business API, retired in October 2025, said profile photos are scaled and cropped to a square no bigger than 640 pixels, and recommended 640 by 640.
Every WhatsApp photo we measured fits that, so this tool makes 640 by 640.
Is 1080 by 1080 better for a WhatsApp DP?
No. The largest copy WhatsApp kept of any photo we measured was 640 by 640, so a 1080 by 1080 upload ends up at that size anyway. It only takes longer to send.
How do I set a full photo as my DP without cropping?
WhatsApp crops a profile photo to a square, so a tall or wide photo loses its edges. Here, pick White border, Black border or Blurred border under Fill the box, and the whole photo fits inside the 640 square.
Keep faces near the middle, because WhatsApp shows the square in a circle.
What size is a WhatsApp group icon?
The same square. We read ten group icons from public invite pages: seven were 640 by 640, and the others 500, 451 and 200 pixels, all square JPEGs. Three channel photos were 640 by 640 too.
A group icon uploaded small stays small, so start from 640.
Is there a minimum size or a file size limit?
Not in WhatsApp's help. Meta's retired API guide warned that images under 192 pixels high or wide may cause problems when resized, and capped uploads at 5MB.
WhatsApp saves its own JPEG of a few dozen kilobytes anyway, so the size of the file you upload makes no difference to how it looks.
