That runs from a 1080 by 566 landscape to a 1080 by 1440 portrait, the shape a phone camera shoots. A story is 1080 by 1920 and a reel cover 420 by 654. Pick one below.
Every size, and where it comes from
One line per image, each read at the platform's own help page on the date shown. A row with a link has its own page with the full rules.
"Our size" marks a box this tool chose because the platform states only a shape or a minimum.

How does the platform state its sizes?
Instagram does not publish a list of post sizes. It publishes one rule: any shape from 1.91:1 to 3:4 is kept as it is, and anything wider or taller is cropped to fit.
So the square, the portrait and the landscape here are three points on that one rule. The portrait is its tallest end, and a phone portrait at 3024 by 4032 fits it with nothing cropped.
Want the 4 by 5 portrait many templates ask for, which sits inside the same range? Resize an image to 1080 x 1350.

These numbers move, so check the date
A passport size has been the same for decades.
A platform's recommended image size can change in a product update nobody announces, which is why every size here shows the date somebody read it at the platform's own help page rather than presenting it as timeless.
If that date looks old and the size matters to you, the link beside it goes straight to the page it came from.
That is one click to confirm, against the alternative of trusting a number copied between blog posts since 2019.
Why your photo gets cropped
Platform sizes are shapes as much as sizes, and a photograph is rarely already that shape.
The box is filled and the overflow comes off the long edges evenly, because the alternative is stretching the picture and a stretched face is the one result nobody wants.
If the centre is not the part you want to keep, open the crop tool, drag the frame to the right region, and come back. The crop stays applied while you set the size.
What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
Is 1080 by 1350 the tallest Instagram post?
No. Instagram's resolution page accepts shapes up to 3:4, which at 1080 wide is 1440 tall. Many guides still stop at the 4:5 portrait, 1080 by 1350.
A phone camera shoots 3:4, so the 1080 by 1440 portrait keeps the whole photo. The 4:5 limit is real for scheduling tools: Instagram's API for posting from other apps accepts only 4:5 to 1.91:1.
What happens to a photo outside Instagram's range?
Instagram's help page says a photo whose shape is not between 1.91:1 and 3:4 is cropped to fit a supported one. One narrower than 320 pixels is enlarged to 320, and one wider than 1080 is sized down to 1080.
Cropping it here first lets you choose what stays.
How much does a landscape post crop from a phone photo?
A phone landscape at 4032 by 3024 is 4:3, much taller than 1.91:1. Scaled to 1080 wide it is 810 tall, and the 1080 by 566 landscape keeps its middle 566, losing 122 pixels from the top and the bottom.
The square or the portrait keeps more of it.
Does Instagram have a file size limit for photos?
Its resolution page states none, so no row here claims one. The 30 MB on the story row is Meta's figure for photos in Stories ads.
The 8 MB some guides quote is the limit for apps posting through Instagram's API, not for the Instagram app itself.
