Why this size?
1080 by 1350 is a 4 by 5 portrait at 1080 pixels wide. Templates and designers ask for it by name for vertical feed posts.
It is close to the 3 by 4 shape a phone camera takes, so a portrait needs almost no trimming. A landscape loses a lot from its sides.
Posting to Instagram? Its help page allows heights from 566 to 1440 at 1080 wide, and 1350 is inside that range. Instagram post size.
What gets cropped, and why nothing is stretched
A photograph is almost never the shape you are asking for.
The image is scaled until it fills the box and the overflow is then taken off the long edges, evenly from both sides.
The alternative is stretching, which leaves faces and straight lines visibly wrong, so this tool never does it.
If the crop takes something you wanted to keep, change the width or the height in the panel and the box changes with it.
Turning the lock back on makes both fields follow your photo's own proportions again, which gives you the whole frame at a smaller size instead.
What if the photo is smaller than the box?
It is scaled up to fill it, because a page that promises an exact size has to deliver one.
Enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured, so the result is softer than the original.
Starting from the largest copy you have is always worth the extra second it takes to find it.
What happens to your photo?

Common questions
How much of my photo is cropped?
A 3024 by 4032 phone portrait is scaled to 1080 by 1440 and loses 45 pixels from the top and 45 from the bottom.
A 4000 by 6000 portrait, the 2 by 3 shape of many cameras, loses 135 from each end. A 4032 by 3024 landscape is scaled to 1800 by 1350 and loses 360 from each side.
Why not just use a 1080 by 1080 square?
A square crops a portrait much harder. The same 3024 by 4032 photo, scaled to 1080 by 1440, loses 180 pixels from each end to become a square, against 45 at 1080 by 1350.
Is 1080 by 1350 exactly 4:5?
Yes. 1080 divided by 4 is 270, and 270 times 5 is 1350.
So 864 by 1080 and 2160 by 2700 are the same shape with fewer or more pixels. Use this page when a template asks for 1080 by 1350 specifically.
