Why this size?
1080 by 1920 is the full HD 1920 by 1080 frame turned on its side. Vertical video, phone wallpapers and full screen story formats use this 9 by 16 shape.
A camera photo is rarely that tall and narrow, so the sides come off. Keep the subject near the middle of the frame.

What gets cropped, and why nothing is stretched
A photograph is almost never the shape you are asking for.
The image is scaled until it fills the box and the overflow is then taken off the long edges, evenly from both sides.
The alternative is stretching, which leaves faces and straight lines visibly wrong, so this tool never does it.
If the crop takes something you wanted to keep, change the width or the height in the panel and the box changes with it.
Turning the lock back on makes both fields follow your photo's own proportions again, which gives you the whole frame at a smaller size instead.
What if the photo is smaller than the box?
It is scaled up to fill it, because a page that promises an exact size has to deliver one.
Enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured, so the result is softer than the original.
Starting from the largest copy you have is always worth the extra second it takes to find it.
What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
How much of my photo is cropped?
It depends on the photo's shape. A 3024 by 4032 portrait, a common phone camera size, is scaled to 1440 by 1920 and loses 180 pixels from each side.
A 4032 by 3024 landscape is scaled to 2560 by 1920 and loses 740 from each side, so only the middle 1080 survives.
My screenshot is taller than 1080 by 1920. What happens?
A 1080 by 2340 screenshot is already 1080 wide, so it is not scaled at all. The extra height comes off evenly: 210 pixels from the top and 210 from the bottom.
On most screenshots that removes the status bar, and possibly the first and last lines of content.
Is 1080x1920 the same as 1920x1080?
It is the same number of pixels turned a quarter turn. 1920x1080 is landscape and 1080x1920 is portrait.
If your photo is landscape and you want to keep all of it, use the 1920 by 1080 page instead.
