Resize an image to 800 x 600

Drop a photo and it comes out exactly 800 pixels wide by 600 tall, the 4 by 3 shape a phone camera shoots by default.

A 4032 by 3024 phone photo is scaled down whole, with nothing cropped. A 3 by 2 camera photo loses 50 pixels from each side. Nothing is uploaded.

Why this size?

800 by 600 was SVGA, a common monitor resolution in the late 1990s, and early web layouts were built to fit it. Upload forms, image slots and slide templates still ask for it by name.

It is 480,000 pixels, about a twenty-fifth of a 12 megapixel phone photo, so the file comes out small.

The target is 800 × 600 pixels. Different source proportions require a crop.

What gets cropped, and why nothing is stretched

A photograph is almost never the shape you are asking for.

The image is scaled until it fills the box and the overflow is then taken off the long edges, evenly from both sides.

The alternative is stretching, which leaves faces and straight lines visibly wrong, so this tool never does it.

If the crop takes something you wanted to keep, change the width or the height in the panel and the box changes with it.

Turning the lock back on makes both fields follow your photo's own proportions again, which gives you the whole frame at a smaller size instead.

Crop fills the box. Fit preserves the entire image and leaves unused space.

What if the photo is smaller than the box?

It is scaled up to fill it, because a page that promises an exact size has to deliver one.

Enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured, so the result is softer than the original.

Starting from the largest copy you have is always worth the extra second it takes to find it.

Common questions

Will my photo be cropped?

Not if it is a 4 by 3 phone photo. A 4032 by 3024 picture scales straight down to 800 by 600 and keeps every edge.

A 3 by 2 camera photo is scaled to 900 by 600 and loses 50 pixels from each side. A 1920 by 1080 screenshot is scaled to 1067 by 600 and loses 133 on the left and 134 on the right.

My photo is portrait. What happens?

A 3024 by 4032 portrait is scaled to 800 by 1067, then 233 pixels come off the top and 234 off the bottom. Only 56 percent of its height survives.

To keep all of it, choose White border under Fill the box. The photo becomes 450 by 600 with a 175 pixel band on each side.

How big is an 800 by 600 file?

Our five test photos came out between 64 KB and 125 KB as JPEGs at the tool's default quality of 82. The smallest was a sunflower on a soft background, the largest a street full of signs.

That is about half what the same photos weigh at 1000 by 1000, which has a little over twice the pixels.
