A 4032 by 3024 phone photo is scaled down to 1600 by 1200, then 200 pixels come off each side. At 300 DPI the square prints 4 inches wide. Nothing is uploaded.
Why this size?
1200 by 1200 is a large square for a product gallery, a square post or a portfolio tile. It is 1.44 million pixels, 23 percent more than a 1080 square and 44 percent more than a 1000 square.
A 12 megapixel phone photo only has to shrink to reach it. Keep that original, because detail lost in a 1200 square does not come back.
Making a 1200 square for a US visa? The DS-160 also limits the file to 240 kB, so start with US visa photo size for the DS-160.

What gets cropped, and why nothing is stretched
A photograph is almost never the shape you are asking for.
The image is scaled until it fills the box and the overflow is then taken off the long edges, evenly from both sides.
The alternative is stretching, which leaves faces and straight lines visibly wrong, so this tool never does it.
If the crop takes something you wanted to keep, change the width or the height in the panel and the box changes with it.
Turning the lock back on makes both fields follow your photo's own proportions again, which gives you the whole frame at a smaller size instead.

What if the photo is smaller than the box?
It is scaled up to fill it, because a page that promises an exact size has to deliver one.
Enlarging cannot add detail that was never captured, so the result is softer than the original.
Starting from the largest copy you have is always worth the extra second it takes to find it.
What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
How much of my photo is cut off?
A 4032 by 3024 phone photo is scaled to 1600 by 1200, then 200 pixels come off each side. You keep three quarters of the width.
A 6000 by 4000 camera photo is scaled to 1800 by 1200 and loses 300 from each side. A 3024 by 4032 portrait loses 200 from the top and 200 from the bottom instead.
Is my photo big enough for 1200 by 1200?
Look at its shorter side. At 1200 pixels or more, the photo is only scaled down. A 4032 by 3024 phone photo, at 3024, clears it with room to spare.
A 1920 by 1080 screenshot falls short. It is enlarged 11 percent, to 2133 by 1200, then loses 466 pixels on the left and 467 on the right.
Can I keep the whole photo in the square?
Yes. Once your photo is open, choose White border under Fill the box. The whole photo is scaled to 1200 on its long side and white fills the rest.
A 4032 by 3024 photo becomes 1200 by 900, with a 150 pixel band above and a 150 pixel band below.
How big is a 1200 by 1200 file?
Our five test photos came out between 197 KB and 300 KB as JPEGs at the tool's default quality of 82. The smallest was a sunflower on a soft background, the largest a waterfall in a forest full of leaves.
Three of the five were over 240 kB. A 1280 by 959 photo, enlarged to fill the square, still weighed 277 KB.
Can I use this for a US visa photo?
1200 by 1200 is the largest square the DS-160 accepts, but the pixels are only one rule. The file must also stay under 240 kB and be compressed no more than 20 to 1.
At 1200 square that leaves a narrow window, so the US visa photo page opens the tool at 600 by 600 instead.
