File size mode works at up to 5120 pixels on the long side. A 12 megapixel iPhone photo kept every pixel at quality 96. Our 24 and 48 megapixel photos came out 5120 by 3840, at quality 90 to 96.

What to expect at this size

These are measured figures, not estimates. Five photographs were run through this page's own engine and the results written down.

The range is what varies between an easy photograph and a hard one: a flower against a blurred background compresses far better than a street full of signage.

Which forms ask for 5 MB?

Each form below states 5 MB as the most it accepts. Where a form also states a minimum, this page does not check it. The form's own page keeps the file inside the whole range.

Why do forms ask for this size?

A phone saves its photos at a high quality, so a 24 or 48 megapixel picture often runs well past 5 MB. A form with a 5 MB ceiling turns it away.

The four iPhone 15 Pro photos we tested were 6.86 MB to 12.76 MB as published on Wikimedia Commons. Every one came out under 5 MB.

At 5120 by 3840, a 48 megapixel photo keeps about 20 megapixels. That is still more than twice what a 4K screen shows.

The 5 MB target is a limit, not a guaranteed result for every image.

What is the difference between resizing and compression?

The main difference between resizing and compression is the measurement you change. Resizing changes width and height in pixels. Compression reduces file size in bytes.

A photo can have the correct dimensions and still exceed an upload limit, so check both requirements.

A large landscape frame becomes smaller when resized; two equal-sized frames illustrate compression without changing dimensions.A large landscape frame becomes smaller when resized; two equal-sized frames illustrate compression without changing dimensions.
Resize changes the dimensions. Compression changes how the pixels are stored.

If you need both, set the dimensions first and then adjust quality or the file size target. Work from the original and download once to avoid repeatedly recompressing a saved JPEG.

PNG has no quality setting, so a PNG over the target is reduced to fewer colours instead, keeping as many as fit. The meter shows the count.

Screenshots and graphics usually survive this with no visible change. A photograph needs many colours, so bands of flat colour can appear at a small target, and JPEG is then the better format.

What happens to your photo?

Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.

Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.

Common questions

Will my phone photo keep its full resolution?

A 12 megapixel photo will. Our 4032 by 3024 iPhone photo came out at its own size, quality 96, 4.16 MB.

A 24 or 48 megapixel photo is wider than 5120 pixels, so file size mode brings its long side down to 5120. Our 5712 pixel bridge photo came out 5120 by 3840 at quality 90.

How do I get under 5 MB and keep every pixel?

Choose Pixels, which keeps your photo's own width and height, and lower the quality until the Download button reads under 5 MB.

Our 24 megapixel bridge photo fitted at quality 83. Our two 48 megapixel street scenes needed 87 and 71.

Is 5 MB 5,000,000 or 5,242,880 bytes?

This tool counts 5 MB as 5,242,880 bytes. A form may count 5,000,000. Our 24 megapixel photo came out at 5,190,183 bytes, under the first and over the second.

If the form is strict, type 4882 in the exact size box. That aims for 4,999,168 bytes, and our three largest phone photos came out 4,672,832 to 4,769,890.

Why did my photo come out bigger than it went in?

File size mode saves at the highest quality that fits, up to 96. A photo that was saved at a lower quality can grow. Our 369 KB waterfall came out at 497 KB.

If your file is already under 5 MB, upload it as it is. Nothing here needs to touch it.
