Each size on this page was read at the issuing authority's own website, not copied from another converter or from a search result.

The page it came from and the date it was read are printed above, so you can check the same source in one click.

Why this size?

Saudi Arabia has two official visa portals, and their photo rules differ. The Foreign Ministry's KSA Visa platform, which its tourism visa page says now issues the e-visa, asks for 35 x 45 mm on a plain background, PNG or JPEG, up to 5 MB.

The tourism portal, visa.visitsaudi.com, still publishes the rule other sites repeat: 200 x 200 pixels, 5 to 100 KB, on white. One is a square and the other is not, so the switcher makes each from your original.

KSA Visa's uploader crops your photo to 3:4, saves it as a PNG, then checks the 5 MB limit again. Our 1600 by 2400 test portraits, 137 to 326 KB as JPEGs, came out 2.0 to 3.7 MB that way.

A photo with more pixels makes a bigger PNG, and one over 5 MB is refused even though the file you chose was under it. This tool's 413 by 531 file came out 398 by 531 and 299,535 bytes that way.

Where the pixel figure comes from

Passport offices publish millimetres, not pixels, because the photograph is printed. Turning millimetres into pixels needs a resolution, and most authorities do not name one.

This one does not, so the pixel figure above is 300 DPI, the resolution print shops work to. The millimetre measurement is the requirement; the pixel figure is our arithmetic on top of it.

The file you download records that resolution in its header, so a print dialog set to actual size uses it instead of guessing at 72 or 96 DPI and printing the photo several times too large.

That matters if you are uploading rather than printing.

An online form usually states its own pixel size or file size limit, and where an authority publishes one this page uses that instead of converting anything.

Check before you submit

Requirements change, and the only version that counts is the one on the authority's own page on the day you apply.

Every size here links to the page it came from and shows the date it was read. If that date looks old, spend a minute at the source before you print anything.

Common questions

Is a Saudi e-visa photo 200 x 200 pixels?

On visa.visitsaudi.com, yes. Its Photo Specifications page asks for 200 x 200 pixels and 5 to 100 KB. The Foreign Ministry's KSA Visa platform asks for 35 x 45 mm instead.

Switch to visitsaudi.com above for the square. A square sent to KSA Visa is cropped to 3:4 by its uploader, which cuts a quarter of its width.

Why does KSA Visa say "Maximum file size is 5 MB" for a smaller photo?

Because it checks twice. It checks the file you choose, then crops it to 3:4, saves the crop as a PNG and checks that too.

A PNG keeps every pixel, so it is far bigger than the JPEG. Our 1600 by 2400 test portraits grew from 137 to 326 KB as JPEGs to 2.0 to 3.7 MB as PNGs. Resize the photo first and both checks pass.

What background does a Saudi visa photo need?

KSA Visa asks only for a plain background and names no colour. visitsaudi.com asks for white, with no pattern, no shadows and nobody else in the photo.

White meets both, so it is the safe choice.

Can I wear a head covering in a Saudi visa photo?

visitsaudi.com says head wear is generally not permitted, with exceptions, especially for religious reasons. Your face must then be visible from the tip of your chin to your forehead, with no shadows on it.

KSA Visa asks you to dress appropriately, face the camera with your head straight, and keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed.

How big should my face be on a 200 x 200 photo?

visitsaudi.com says your face should take up 70 to 80 percent of the photo, "or 1.4" x 1.6" from the chin to the crown". Inches describe a print, so on a file only the percentage applies.

Read as a share of the height, 70 to 80 percent of 200 pixels is 140 to 160 pixels from chin to crown.

Do I need to print a Saudi e-visa photo?

No. Both portals take the photo as a file in the online form, and the Foreign Ministry says the e-visa itself is delivered by email.

Neither portal publishes a print resolution. The 413 by 531 pixels here are 35 x 45 mm at 300 DPI, this tool's conversion.
