Each size on this page was read at the issuing authority's own website, not copied from another converter or from a search result.

The page it came from and the date it was read are printed above, so you can check the same source in one click.

Why this size?

The rule is SPA's, the Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Awam. You register in SPA9, then log in to MyResume with the same ID and password to upload a profile photo and your documents.

We read SPA's Panduan Gambar for MyResume, version 1.0, and its user guide. Both give 35 mm wide by 50 mm high, and both say the file must be a .jpg or .png of less than 1 MB.

That is the Malaysian passport photo's size, not the 35 x 45 mm many countries use. A photo cropped for another country's passport is 5 mm too short.

SPA states millimetres and no pixels. This tool makes the photo at 35 x 50 mm and keeps the file under 1 MB. A phone photo straight from the camera is often larger than that.

Tool output: 413 × 591 px. Dimensions alone do not establish document acceptance.

Where the pixel figure comes from

Passport offices publish millimetres, not pixels, because the photograph is printed. Turning millimetres into pixels needs a resolution, and most authorities do not name one.

This one does not, so the pixel figure above is 300 DPI, the resolution print shops work to. The millimetre measurement is the requirement; the pixel figure is our arithmetic on top of it.

The file you download records that resolution in its header, so a print dialog set to actual size uses it instead of guessing at 72 or 96 DPI and printing the photo several times too large.

That matters if you are uploading rather than printing.

An online form usually states its own pixel size or file size limit, and where an authority publishes one this page uses that instead of converting anything.

Check before you submit

Requirements change, and the only version that counts is the one on the authority's own page on the day you apply.

Every size here links to the page it came from and shows the date it was read. If that date looks old, spend a minute at the source before you print anything.

Common questions

What size is the SPA photo?

35 mm wide by 50 mm high. SPA's user guide for MyResume states it in those words, and its photo guide draws the same box.

SPA gives no pixel size. This tool makes 413 by 591 pixels, which is that box at 300 DPI.

What file does MyResume accept?

A .jpg or .png of less than 1 MB. The user guide shows a 3 MB file being refused.

The same rule covers every other upload it lists: both sides of your MyKad, your birth certificate, certificates and transcripts. The guide names JPG and PNG only.

How big should my face be?

SPA gives no measurement in millimetres. Its examples of refused photos include a face that does not fill 70% of the picture, and a face that is too large.

So frame your head and shoulders, as SPA's own sample does, not a tight crop and not a half-body shot.

What background and clothes does SPA ask for?

The background must be white. SPA asks for decent clothing, a face looking straight at the camera, and no flash glare on the forehead.

A head covering or tudung must be a dark colour, preferably black, and the whole face must be clear.

Can I wear glasses?

No. SPA's guide rules out glasses, coloured contact lenses and head or hair accessories.

Hair must not cover the face or forehead. Both ears should be visible if you do not wear a hijab.

Can I use a selfie?

No. The guide says the photo must not be an instant photo or a selfie, and its refused examples include a mirror selfie.

The photo must be recent, and you upload it as a file.

Is it the same as the Malaysian passport photo?

The size and background are: 35 x 50 mm on white. The file rule differs.

The passport renewal upload takes a JPG of 100 KB to 300 KB. MyResume takes a JPG or PNG under 1 MB, with no minimum stated.
