Each size on this page was read at the issuing authority's own website, not copied from another converter or from a search result.

The page it came from and the date it was read are printed above, so you can check the same source in one click.

Why this size?

The rules are one sheet from the Danish National Police, titled for the passport and the driving licence together. borger.dk repeats the size and the head height word for word.

You bring one printed photo to borgerservice in any kommune you choose. Some kommuner take the photo at the counter instead, so ask yours before you print. The photo's price comes on top of the passport fee.

The print is scanned into the passport, which is why the sheet asks for good photo paper, a very high resolution, and no holes, stamps or other damage.

Abroad it works differently. A Danish embassy photographs anyone aged 12 and over for the biometric passport, so an adult brings no photo at all.

Where the pixel figure comes from

Passport offices publish millimetres, not pixels, because the photograph is printed. Turning millimetres into pixels needs a resolution, and most authorities do not name one.

This one does not, so the pixel figure above is 300 DPI, the resolution print shops work to. The millimetre measurement is the requirement; the pixel figure is our arithmetic on top of it.

The file you download records that resolution in its header, so a print dialog set to actual size uses it instead of guessing at 72 or 96 DPI and printing the photo several times too large.

That matters if you are uploading rather than printing.

An online form usually states its own pixel size or file size limit, and where an authority publishes one this page uses that instead of converting anything.

Check before you submit

Requirements change, and the only version that counts is the one on the authority's own page on the day you apply.

Every size here links to the page it came from and shows the date it was read. If that date looks old, spend a minute at the source before you print anything.

Common questions

What size is a Danish passport photo?

35 mm wide by 45 mm high. The head, from the tip of the chin to the top of the hair, must measure between 30 and 36 mm.

The photo is taken straight on and shows your face and the top of your shoulders. Only you are in it, with your eyes open and your mouth closed.

Can a Danish passport photo have a white background?

The Police sheet asks for one even light colour with no pattern, and gives light blue and light grey as examples. White is not named, for or against.

If your hair is white or very light, or you wear a light headscarf, the sheet asks for a background in sharp contrast. Against white, that photo would fail.

Do I need to bring a photo, or does borgerservice take it?

Usually you bring it. borger.dk asks for a photo that looks like you and meets the Police rules, whether you renew or apply for the first time.

In some kommuner borgerservice can take the photo for you. borger.dk says to check with your kommune, as it differs from one to the next.

I live abroad. Do I bring a photo to the Danish embassy?

Not if you are 12 or over. The Foreign Ministry says the embassy takes your photo digitally for the biometric passport.

Bring a printed photo for a child under 12 applying at a consulate, for a baby or very young child, and for any emergency passport.

Is the Danish driving licence photo the same?

Yes. The Police publish one sheet for the passport and the driving licence, so the same 35 by 45 mm print, with the same head height and background, works for both.

Can a Danish passport photo be black and white?

Yes. The Police sheet allows colour or black and white. Either way it must be a photograph, or a print on good photo paper at a very high resolution, with natural tones and no grain.

What size is a Danish passport photo in pixels?

Denmark does not publish one. The Police ask only for a very high resolution.

This tool makes 413 by 531 pixels, which is 35 by 45 mm at 300 DPI, and saves 300 DPI in the file so a print shop prints it at size.

Do the same rules apply to children?

Yes. The Police sheet says every rule applies to children as well. Where a rule cannot be met, it adds that single requirements can be waived in special cases, decided where you apply.
