The Foreign Ministry adds that the face should fill 70 to 80 percent and the wall is normally white or light grey. Consulates do not all agree, and some ask for 3 by 4 cm.

Why this size?
Spain's Foreign Ministry publishes no single visa photo size. Each consulate lists its own documents, so the figure depends on where you apply.
The Mexico consulate's visa pages say generally 35 by 45 mm, with the face at 70 to 80 percent and a uniform light background. Buenos Aires says only passport-style, in colour, on a light background.
Casablanca and Sao Paulo ask for 3 by 4 cm on white, and La Paz for 4 by 5 cm on white. The BLS Spain Visa centres, which collect applications in some countries, give 3.5 by 4.5 cm.
The Spanish passport is a different rule, 32 by 26 mm. If your consulate's checklist names another size, follow it.

Where the pixel figure comes from
Passport offices publish millimetres, not pixels, because the photograph is printed. Turning millimetres into pixels needs a resolution, and most authorities do not name one.
This one does not, so the pixel figure above is 300 DPI, the resolution print shops work to. The millimetre measurement is the requirement; the pixel figure is our arithmetic on top of it.
The file you download records that resolution in its header, so a print dialog set to actual size uses it instead of guessing at 72 or 96 DPI and printing the photo several times too large.
That matters if you are uploading rather than printing.
An online form usually states its own pixel size or file size limit, and where an authority publishes one this page uses that instead of converting anything.
Check before you submit
Requirements change, and the only version that counts is the one on the authority's own page on the day you apply.
Every size here links to the page it came from and shows the date it was read. If that date looks old, spend a minute at the source before you print anything.

Common questions
What size is a Spanish visa photo?
Generally 35 by 45 mm, where the Foreign Ministry names a size. The Mexico consulate's visa pages say so, and the BLS Spain Visa centres in Egypt, South Africa and Turkey give the same size.
Other consulates differ: Casablanca and Sao Paulo ask for 3 by 4 cm and La Paz for 4 by 5 cm. Your own consulate's checklist decides.
Is a Spanish visa photo 35 by 45 mm?
Most often. It is the Foreign Ministry's own word at Mexico, but it says generally, and two consulates ask for 3 by 4 cm instead.
A 35 by 45 mm print is 5 mm wider and 5 mm taller than 3 by 4 cm, so trimming it down loses margin around the head.
What background does a Spanish visa photo need?
Plain and light. London, Casablanca, La Paz, Sao Paulo and the BLS centre in South Africa ask for white. Mexico asks for uniform and light, normally white or light grey, and Buenos Aires says light.
Plain white under even light meets every wording we read.
How many photos do I need for a Spanish visa?
It depends on the consulate. London, Edinburgh and Mexico ask for one. Casablanca and the BLS centre in Ankara ask for two.
The photo must be recent. The BLS centres say taken in the last six months.
Do I upload the photo, and how many KB?
None of the pages we read states a pixel size, a file size or a DPI, because the checklists ask for a printed photo with the application.
The size limits some photo sites give are on none of them.
What size is a Spanish visa photo in pixels?
None is published. This tool makes 413 by 531 pixels, which is 35 by 45 mm at 300 DPI, and writes 300 DPI into the file so it prints at size.
Is it the same as a Spanish passport photo?
No. A Spanish passport photo is 32 by 26 mm on white, set in Spanish law. The visa checklists we read ask for a larger photo, generally 35 by 45 mm, so a passport print is too small.
