That is 5 mm shorter than the 35 by 45 mm Italian passport photo. Each mission's checklist sets its own number of photos.

Each size on this page was read at the issuing authority's own website, not copied from another converter or from a search result.

The page it came from and the date it was read are printed above, so you can check the same source in one click.

Why this size?

Italy's Foreign Ministry publishes no single visa photo size. Each embassy and consulate lists its own documents, so the figure comes from the mission you apply to.

The five we read agree on the size. Ankara, Istanbul, Astana, Santiago and Sao Paulo all say 35 by 40 mm. Astana cites the ICAO standard for it.

The passport is a different rule. The Polizia di Stato asks for 35 by 45 mm on white. A passport print is the wrong height for these checklists.

If your consulate's checklist names another size, follow it.

Tool output: 413 × 472 px. Dimensions alone do not establish document acceptance.

Where the pixel figure comes from

Passport offices publish millimetres, not pixels, because the photograph is printed. Turning millimetres into pixels needs a resolution, and most authorities do not name one.

This one does not, so the pixel figure above is 300 DPI, the resolution print shops work to. The millimetre measurement is the requirement; the pixel figure is our arithmetic on top of it.

The file you download records that resolution in its header, so a print dialog set to actual size uses it instead of guessing at 72 or 96 DPI and printing the photo several times too large.

That matters if you are uploading rather than printing.

An online form usually states its own pixel size or file size limit, and where an authority publishes one this page uses that instead of converting anything.

Check before you submit

Requirements change, and the only version that counts is the one on the authority's own page on the day you apply.

Every size here links to the page it came from and shows the date it was read. If that date looks old, spend a minute at the source before you print anything.

Common questions

What size is an Italian visa photo?

35 by 40 mm at the five missions we read: Ankara, Istanbul, Astana, Santiago and Sao Paulo. Astana writes it as 3.5 by 4.0 cm and ties it to the ICAO standard.

Italy's Foreign Ministry states no national figure, so your own consulate's checklist decides.

Is an Italian visa photo 35 by 45 mm?

Not on the checklists we read. They say 35 by 40 mm. The 35 by 45 mm size is the Italian passport photo, and it is what most photo guides repeat for the visa.

The width is the same, so a 35 by 45 mm print is 5 mm too tall and needs trimming.

What background does an Italian visa photo need?

Plain and light. Ankara and Istanbul ask for a light background, in Italian "sfondo chiaro". Astana asks for white.

Plain white under even light meets both wordings. None of the three forbids white, unlike the French passport rule.

How many photos do I need for an Italian visa?

It depends on the mission. Ankara's tourism checklist asks for two. Istanbul's study checklist and Sao Paulo's FAQ ask for one.

The photos must be recent. Astana says taken in the last six months.

Do I upload the photo, and how many KB?

None of the pages we read states a pixel size, a file size or a DPI, because the checklists ask for a printed photo with the application.

The 600 DPI and size limits some guides give are on none of them.

What size is an Italian visa photo in pixels?

None is published. This tool makes 413 by 472 pixels, which is 35 by 40 mm at 300 DPI, and writes 300 DPI into the file so it prints at size.

Is it the same as an Italian passport photo?

No. The Polizia di Stato asks for 35 by 45 mm on a white background and one photo. The visa checklists we read ask for 35 by 40 mm on a light background, and one or two photos.
