A Turkish passport photo is a 50 mm by 60 mm print on a plain white background, taken in the last six months. It is not the 35 by 45 mm most of Europe uses. You bring one photo to the population office, where it is scanned and handed back.

The page it came from and the date it was read are printed above, so you can check the same source in one click.
Why this size?
Turkish passports are issued by the Interior Ministry's population directorate, known as NVI. Its passport FAQ gives the size, 50 by 60 mm, and asks for one biometric photo taken in the last six months, at every age.
You hand the print over at the population office or the consulate. The passport instruction says it is attached to the form and scanned into the system, and a 2019 NVI letter tells offices to give it back afterwards.
So the scan of your print is what ends up in the passport. NVI's Istanbul office warns that a photo of the wrong size or background cannot complete the application, or fails quality control later, and you apply again.
The same office asks applicants to remind the photographer not to cut the photo to 35 by 45 mm. Any photographer can take a biometric photo; there is no approved list.

Where the pixel figure comes from
Passport offices publish millimetres, not pixels, because the photograph is printed. Turning millimetres into pixels needs a resolution, and most authorities do not name one.
This one does not, so the pixel figure above is 300 DPI, the resolution print shops work to. The millimetre measurement is the requirement; the pixel figure is our arithmetic on top of it.
The file you download records that resolution in its header, so a print dialog set to actual size uses it instead of guessing at 72 or 96 DPI and printing the photo several times too large.
That matters if you are uploading rather than printing.
An online form usually states its own pixel size or file size limit, and where an authority publishes one this page uses that instead of converting anything.
Check before you submit
Requirements change, and the only version that counts is the one on the authority's own page on the day you apply.
Every size here links to the page it came from and shows the date it was read. If that date looks old, spend a minute at the source before you print anything.

Common questions
What size is a Turkish passport photo?
50 mm wide by 60 mm high, which is 5 by 6 cm. NVI's passport FAQ states it, and the Foreign Ministry's consular FAQ gives the same size for the Turkish identity card.
The photo is taken from the front within the last six months, with the eyes, forehead, face and chin uncovered.
Is a 35 x 45 mm photo accepted for a Turkish passport?
No. NVI's Istanbul office says an application with a photo of another size or background cannot be completed, or is cancelled at quality control, and you must apply again.
It tells applicants to remind the photographer not to cut the photo to 35 by 45 mm.
How many photos do I need?
One. NVI's document list for an ordinary passport asks for one biometric photo taken in the last six months.
A 2019 NVI letter tells its offices to return the photo once the application is complete, and not to ask for another to keep on file. Guides that say two repeat an older rule.
Can the background be grey?
NVI's Istanbul office and the consulates in Los Angeles and New York say white, with no pattern and no shadows.
The passport instruction, as amended in May 2023, is more specific: mid-tone grey for light hair, and preferably white for dark hair. NVI's site no longer serves that file, so we read an archived copy from June 2025.
How big should the face be?
The passport instruction says the face must be 32 to 36 mm high and cover 70 to 80 percent of the photo. It names no photo size.
On this print the two cannot both hold. Seventy to eighty percent of 60 mm is 42 to 48 mm, which the same sentence rules out. A face of 32 to 36 mm is 53 to 60 percent of it.
Can I wear glasses in a Turkish passport photo?
NVI allows glasses you have to wear, if the eyes are clear, the lenses are not tinted and show no reflection, and the frame does not cover the eyes. The New York consulate says the same.
The Los Angeles consulate is stricter: no glasses, earrings or hats. Follow the office you apply at.
Is a headscarf allowed?
Yes. NVI says the face must be visible from the tip of the chin to the forehead, with no shadows on it. The passport instruction adds that the scarf must be a different colour from the background.
Hats and caps are not allowed.
I am applying at a Turkish consulate. Is the photo the same?
Yes, the same 50 by 60 mm print. The Los Angeles consulate adds that 2 by 2 inches is also acceptable, because that size is common in the USA.
That is one consulate's note, dated September 2024. Elsewhere, check your own consulate's page before you print.
Can I print the photo myself?
NVI's FAQ refuses photocopies and photos reproduced on a computer, and does not define the phrase. Take the file to a photo lab for a print on photo paper, not an office printer.
The consulates ask for quality paper and refuse a photo that is damaged, creased or wrinkled.
What size is a Turkish passport photo in pixels?
Turkey does not publish one, because the photo is handed over as a print and scanned at the office.
This tool makes 591 by 709 pixels, which is 50 by 60 mm at 300 DPI, and saves 300 DPI in the file so a photo lab prints it at size.
Does a baby or child need a photo?
Yes. NVI's FAQ says a biometric photo is needed at every age, and the consulates apply the same rules to children and babies. No other person or object may appear in a small child's photo.
Biometric data is taken from age 7 and a signature from age 12.
