A Swedish driving licence photo is 35 mm wide by 45 mm high, on a light background with no shadows. The distance from pupil to chin must be 14 to 17 mm. To renew, you post one print with the application form, or use a photo booth at a Trafikverket test centre.

Each size on this page was read at the issuing authority's own website, not copied from another converter or from a search result.

The page it came from and the date it was read are printed above, so you can check the same source in one click.

Why this size?

The rules are Transportstyrelsen's, the Swedish Transport Agency, which makes the licence. Its page says a renewal always needs a new photo, and gives you two ways to supply it.

You can post one print with the application form the agency sends you. A photographer or a photo booth may take it, and the print must be cleanly cut, with round or sharp corners.

Or you can use the photo booth at a Trafikverket test centre. It costs 200 kronor, needs no appointment, and sends your photo and signature straight to the agency. Bring valid ID.

This is not the Swedish passport photo. The police photograph every passport applicant at the passport office, so nobody brings that one.

Where the pixel figure comes from

Passport offices publish millimetres, not pixels, because the photograph is printed. Turning millimetres into pixels needs a resolution, and most authorities do not name one.

This one does not, so the pixel figure above is 300 DPI, the resolution print shops work to. The millimetre measurement is the requirement; the pixel figure is our arithmetic on top of it.

The file you download records that resolution in its header, so a print dialog set to actual size uses it instead of guessing at 72 or 96 DPI and printing the photo several times too large.

That matters if you are uploading rather than printing.

An online form usually states its own pixel size or file size limit, and where an authority publishes one this page uses that instead of converting anything.

Check before you submit

Requirements change, and the only version that counts is the one on the authority's own page on the day you apply.

Every size here links to the page it came from and shows the date it was read. If that date looks old, spend a minute at the source before you print anything.

Common questions

What size is a Swedish driving licence photo?

35 mm wide by 45 mm high. Transportstyrelsen asks for a cleanly cut print, with round or sharp corners.

The whole head must be visible, not only the face, and the photo must be a good likeness.

How big should the face be?

Sweden measures from the pupil to the tip of the chin: 14 to 17 mm on the photo. That is about a third of the height, 31 to 38 percent.

It is not a head height and not a share of the picture, which is how most countries state it. Measure the print with a ruler before you post it.

Can I send my own photo to renew my licence?

Yes. Transportstyrelsen says you choose where the photo is taken, for example a photo booth or a photographer, and attach it to the application form.

You hand in one print. The other route is a Trafikverket booth, which sends the photo digitally, so there is nothing to post.

Does the background have to be white?

Transportstyrelsen says light and without shadows. It does not name white, for or against.

The face must be evenly lit. Sharpness must be on the pupils, and both eyes must be fully visible and looking at the camera.

Colour or black and white?

Either is accepted. Whichever you send, the finished licence shows the photo in black and white, so a colour print gains nothing on the card.

Can I wear glasses or a head covering?

Ordinary glasses are fine if no reflections show. Dark or tinted glasses are not allowed, and neither is headwear.

The agency says exceptions to those two rules are possible in some cases. Contact it before you send the application.

Can I use this photo for a Swedish passport?

No, because nobody supplies a Swedish passport photo. The police take it at the passport office when you apply.

Trafikverket's booths are for licences only. Its own page answers the question of taking a passport photo there with a plain no.

What size is the photo in pixels?

Sweden does not publish one. No file is uploaded: you post a print, or the Trafikverket booth sends its own picture.

This tool makes 413 by 531 pixels, which is 35 by 45 mm at 300 DPI, and saves 300 DPI in the file so a photo lab prints it at size.
