At 300 DPI that is 2550 x 3300 pixels, which this tool makes, saving 300 DPI in the file so it prints at size. A phone photo loses a thin strip of its height, as Letter is wider than 3 by 4.

What is the 8.5 x 11 in print used for?

Letter is the everyday paper size in the United States and Canada. Most other countries print on A4, which is a little narrower and taller.

At 300 DPI a Letter page is 8.4 megapixels, so a 12 MP phone photo fills it with pixels to spare. A 1080 pixel picture from a chat app is stretched to more than twice its width and prints soft.

Need a Letter document rather than a Letter image? The photo can go on a Letter page, scaled to fit with nothing cropped, in Convert JPG to PDF.

How many pixels is 8.5 x 11 in?

It depends on the DPI, the number of pixels printed per inch. The tool uses 300, the usual figure for a photo print, and saves it in the file. Change it beside the size fields.

What gets cropped, and why nothing is stretched

A photograph is almost never the shape you are asking for.

The image is scaled until it fills the box and the overflow is then taken off the long edges, evenly from both sides.

The alternative is stretching, which leaves faces and straight lines visibly wrong, so this tool never does it.

The fields show millimetres, centimetres or inches as well as pixels. Type a print size in any of them and the pixels follow at the DPI you chose.

Common questions

How many pixels is Letter size?

2550 x 3300 at 300 DPI, the usual figure for print. At 150 DPI it is 1275 x 1650, and at 600 DPI 5100 x 6600.

A PDF measures the same page as 612 x 792 points, which is 8.5 x 11 inches at 72 to the inch.

How much of my photo is cut off?

Very little of a phone photo. A 3024 x 4032 photo is scaled to 2550 x 3400, and 100 pixels come off the top and bottom.

A 4000 x 6000 camera photo is scaled to 2550 x 3825 and loses 525 pixels of its height.

Is Letter the same as A4?

No. A4 is 210 x 297 mm, about 6 mm narrower and 18 mm taller than Letter. At 300 DPI A4 is 2480 x 3508 pixels, 70 fewer across and 208 more down.

An image made for one prints on the other with a margin or a trimmed edge.

Can I make it landscape, or Legal size?

Yes. The page opens portrait, 8.5 inches wide. Type 11 in the width and 8.5 in the height for landscape, and the tool makes 3300 x 2550 pixels.

US Legal is 8.5 x 14 inches. Type 14 in the height for 2550 x 4200 pixels, still at 300 DPI.
