Why make this conversion?
A photograph saved as PNG is the heaviest thing a web page can carry, because PNG describes every pixel exactly.
AVIF is lossy and keeps transparency at the same time, which is the combination people reach for PNG to get.
A screenshot or a flat colour graphic is the exception and belongs in PNG.
A conversion never improves a picture
Changing the format changes how the pixels are stored, not what they show. Detail an earlier save discarded is gone, and no later format can work out what used to be there.
If the original file still exists, convert from that instead.
Where it does matter is the order of the work. Resize and crop first, convert last.
Every save to a lossy format costs a little quality, so the fewer round trips a file makes, the better it looks when you are finished.
What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.

Common questions
Does AVIF keep a transparent background?
Yes. AVIF carries an alpha channel in the same way PNG and WebP do, so a logo with a transparent background stays transparent through the conversion.
That is the main thing separating it from JPEG, which fills any transparent area with white.
Should I convert a screenshot to AVIF?
Usually not. The conversion here is lossy, and lossy compression is what turns crisp screenshot text into something faintly smudged.
PNG stores those pixels exactly and is often no larger on a flat image, so keep the PNG for anything that is not a photograph.
