Why make this conversion?
Choose PNG when the photo will be edited and saved again, or when it is a cut-out with a transparent background, which JPG would fill with white.
To share a photo or send it to an upload form, HEIC to JPG is the better pair. Our test photo came out at 1.1 MB as a JPG.
A conversion never improves a picture
Changing the format changes how the pixels are stored, not what they show. Detail an earlier save discarded is gone, and no later format can work out what used to be there.
If the original file still exists, convert from that instead.
Where it does matter is the order of the work. Resize and crop first, convert last.
Every save to a lossy format costs a little quality, so the fewer round trips a file makes, the better it looks when you are finished.
What happens to your photo?
Your selected photo is processed in your browser, without an image upload to a server. The page may download code and codecs needed for editing.
Save your result before closing the tab; unsaved edits are kept in memory rather than in an online account.
Common questions
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
Because HEIC is lossy and PNG records every pixel exactly.
In our tests a 1.2 MB HEIC photo became a 10.2 MB PNG, a 1.5 MB one became 16.1 MB, and a small transparent graphic grew from 9 KB to 27 KB.
Should I convert an iPhone photo to PNG or JPG?
JPG, for almost any photo you want to send, share or upload. From the same two HEIC files the JPGs came out at 1.1 MB and 1.5 MB, about the size of the HEIC.
Pick PNG for a transparent cut-out or a file you will keep editing.
Does the PNG keep a transparent background?
Yes. A HEIC that carries transparency keeps it: the clear corners of our test graphic came out fully transparent in the PNG.
An ordinary iPhone camera photo has no transparent areas, so for most photos the question does not arise.
Is the PNG higher quality than the HEIC?
No. The PNG holds exactly what the HEIC decodes to, at 8 bits per colour channel, so the extra depth of a 10-bit HDR photo does not come across.
What PNG adds is that nothing more is lost when you edit the picture and save it again.
