Why make this conversion?
WebP can preserve transparent areas while using lossy compression for the colour data. That makes it an option for graphics and photos when the destination supports it.
Compare the preview and file size; PNG may be preferable when exact text and edge pixels matter.
A conversion never improves a picture
Changing the format changes how the pixels are stored, not what they show. Detail an earlier save discarded is gone, and no later format can work out what used to be there.
If the original file still exists, convert from that instead.
Where it does matter is the order of the work. Resize and crop first, convert last.
Every save to a lossy format costs a little quality, so the fewer round trips a file makes, the better it looks when you are finished.

Does WebP keep a transparent background?
Yes. WebP carries an alpha channel in the same way PNG does, so a logo with a transparent background stays transparent.
That is the main reason to choose it over JPEG whenever the image is not a photograph.
Is the WebP this tool writes lossy or lossless?
Lossy, with the quality control in the panel deciding how lossy. That is what makes the file smaller than the PNG.
For a screenshot where every pixel has to survive exactly, PNG remains the safer choice.
